Champions Trophy Solution Likely in South Africa
The ICC Champions Trophy is less than 100 days away, but crucial questions remain unanswered. Will the tournament happen on time? If so where?
Until these questions are resolved, the tournament schedule cannot be released, leaving the ICC under considerable pressure.

Is Pakistan Taking Legal Action Against India?
The situation worsened after India declared its unwillingness to play in Pakistan. Following India’s decision, Pakistan has threatened to withdraw from the tournament as well. Adding to the complexity, ICC’s broadcast partner, Star India, is pressuring the ICC to ensure the tournament proceeds with both India and Pakistan participating. Star India’s $3 billion investment (approximately ₹35,838 crore) in ICC broadcasting rights until 2027 relies heavily on the prospect of India-Pakistan clashes. A tournament without either team could result in significant financial losses for the ICC.
If the Champions Trophy is moved from Pakistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) stands to lose around $6.5 million in hosting fees—a substantial amount for the board. PCB has already invested heavily in renovating three venues—Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore—in preparation for the event.
According to reports from Cricket Pakistan, the PCB is in touch with other cricket boards participating in the Champions Trophy. The ICC has informed Pakistan about BCCI’s letter stating India’s refusal to play in Pakistan. In response, Pakistan expressed its concerns and sought clarifications from the ICC. The ICC, in turn, has asked the BCCI for explanations. Cricket Pakistan reports that the ICC may take a few days to respond to PCB’s queries.
Will providing these clarifications resolve the issue? One potential solution could emerge if Pakistan agrees to a hybrid model after being satisfied with the ICC’s explanations. Another alternative being considered is relocating the entire tournament. South Africa has emerged as a strong contender in this scenario, favored by the broadcasters. Cricket South Africa (CSA) is reportedly fully prepared to host the event. However, Pakistan’s consent remains critical. Will PCB relinquish its hosting rights without financial compensation? That seems unlikely.
A third option is postponing the tournament indefinitely, but this might not sit well with Star India. The broadcasters insist that all matches take place in one country, regardless of location. If not in Pakistan, South Africa is Star India’s preferred choice. With the tournament approaching fast, stakeholders are urging a prompt announcement of the schedule, considering logistics, visas, security, and accommodations.
Broadcast sources suggest a resolution could be reached by next Monday or Tuesday.
