Self-Managing an NDIS plan! Discover how Plan Manager Can Work for You!
One of the choices offered to you in handling your NDIS plan is self-management. By self-managing, you’re the one who manages your NDIS funding.
Self-management provides you with some creativity in how to use and maximize your funds.
You are the one who negotiates the cost and support and the terms of your plan with the providers. By self-managing, you have total control over your NDIS plan.
In a self-managed plan, you must keep the invoices and receipts to prove that you are paying your support with the NDIS funds. You will also need the invoices and tickets during the payment auditing.
Finally, you’ll have to advise the NDIA of any changes in your circumstances that will cause your inability to meet your responsibilities as a self-manager.
With a self-managed plan, you will be the one to make payment requests and ensure timely payment of your support.
Should you decide to employ staff, you will need to meet your obligation as an employer. You will need to show the NDIA how you are using your funds.

Benefits of Self-management
Aside from independence and flexibility, self-managing your NDIS plan offers a wide range of other benefits:
- Choice determining what support to buy in line with what will be included in your plan, the support provider, and the delivery method.
- Flexibility to choose the provider who will best meet your goals
- Capacity to employ or contract staff directly or have someone choose the team for you
- Ability to negotiate support costs so you can maximize your money and use your savings to boost the quality of support
How does self-management work?
In a self-managed plan, the NDIS will provide you with the funds for the supports. You will be the one to self-schedule and organize. The funding will depend on your plan and preferences. For example, if you were self-managed, you would be the one to directly connect with support workers, schedule your sessions, meet up with the worker, and pay for the support. You will also be the one to finalize the terms of the agreement. With a self-managed plan, you will receive the following funding:
- Core budget:
This is money to support your daily living, social and community participation, transport, or consumables. - Capacity building budget:
This would cover the cost of living arrangements, employment, training, health, and well-being. - Capital budget:
This would cover the cost of assistive technologies or home modifications.
