Zimbabwe’s Brave Chase Falls Short

Harare witnessed a thriller as Sri Lanka edged Zimbabwe by 7 runs in the first ODI. Chasing 299, Zimbabwe fought bravely, carried by Sikandar Raza’s masterful 92 off 86 balls and Tony Munyonga’s unbeaten 42. With 289 for 5 after 49 overs, the hosts stood just 10 runs away from a famous victory.



Madushanka’s Stunning Last Over

The drama unfolded in the final over. Left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka, who had struggled earlier, rose to the occasion. With 10 needed from 6 balls, he removed Raza with his first delivery, then dismissed Evans and Ngavara in successive balls to complete a sensational hat-trick. Suddenly, Zimbabwe needed 10 runs from 3 balls with only the tailenders left. They managed just 2, falling short of the target by 7 runs.

Sri Lanka Take Series Lead

Madushanka emerged as the hero with 4 for 62, while Asitha Fernando provided strong support with 3 for 50. Earlier, Sri Lanka had posted 298 for 6 after being asked to bat first. Pathum Nissanka anchored the innings with 76, Janith Liyanage remained unbeaten on 70, and Kamindu Mendis smashed a quick 57 off 36 balls to lift the total. Ngavara impressed for Zimbabwe, claiming 2 for 34.

Raza’s Heroics Go in Vain

Despite the heartbreak, Zimbabwe showed remarkable fight. Raza’s brilliant innings, filled with 9 fours and 2 sixes, kept the chase alive. Ben Curran added 70, Sean Williams scored 57, while Munyonga held firm with 43*. For much of the game, Zimbabwe matched Sri Lanka shot for shot and looked set for a famous win, only for Madushanka’s brilliance to snatch it away.

Decider Ahead

With this win, Sri Lanka lead the two-match series 1-0. Zimbabwe must regroup quickly as the teams head into the decisive second ODI, where another close contest awaits.
