“Paris Offers 220,000 Free Condoms for Olympic Romance”

Paris Olympics Organizers Plan to Distribute 220,000 Condoms for Athletes

In anticipation of this year’s Olympic Games in the City of Love, organizers in Paris are gearing up to provide athletes with 220,000 condoms. Unlike the Tokyo Olympics, where athletes were urged to limit physical contact due to COVID-19, participants at the Paris Games will have the freedom to engage in romantic encounters if they choose.

Laurent Dalard, overseeing first aid and health services at Paris 2024, stated that both male and female condoms will be available at the athletes’ village from July 26 to August 11. The quantity may be adjusted based on demand.

This practice of distributing condoms dates back to the 1988 Seoul Olympics, aimed at promoting safe sex and raising awareness about HIV-AIDS. Over the years, the number of condoms distributed has steadily increased, with Rio 2016 topping the charts at 450,000.

Despite the emphasis on safe sex, organizers will also address the rise in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in France. Educational materials on consent and STD prevention will be provided alongside the condoms.

The Olympic village, hosting around 14,000 individuals during the Olympics and another 9,000 during the Paralympics, will feature essential amenities but no alcohol. Organizers emphasize that it’s not a party venue, encouraging athletes to explore Paris for nightlife. While some may envision the Olympic village as a hub of romance, a senior Paris organizer suggests that most condoms may end up being souvenirs rather than used for their intended purpose.
